Adding complete Pokemon TOPPS card library

AppelX 1 year ago updated by sales 1 year ago 19

Dear pricecharting,

I was browsing for a collector app to follow my Pokemon TOPPS collection and i saw you have several sets added on the website.

Thank you for that.

There were 3 things i noticed though:

1. The grouping of the cards isn't great with the different foillings and chase sets.

2. Not all pokemon TOPPS sets are included on the website.

3. The names of the sets differ from the actual set names.

Last month i completed the entire library on pokemon wikipedia: Bulbapedia

Currently I have both frontend and backend quite neatly figured out on Bulbapedia with for example:

frontend - https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_Chrome_Trading_Cards_Series_1

backend - https://archives.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Category:Pok%C3%A9mon_Chrome_Trading_Cards_Series_1

Would u guys be open on discussing those 3 points i raised?

Best regards,

AppelX

Thanks for reaching out.  We definitely want to add any missing sets or correct any problems too with set names etc.

Right now we have these Topps sets on the site:

1999 Topps Movie

1999 Topps TV

2000 Topps Movie

2000 Topps TV

2000 Topps Chrome (we have series 1-3) in this set because they came out the same time and the card numbers are sequential

Please let me know what names you would use for the sets.  What sets are missing.  And any other changes we need to make.

Thank you

After doing a complete overhaul of the bulbapedia, it is now complete and correct.

On the landingpage u can easily see the different sets and subsets of Pokemon TOPPS:

https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Topps

On each subset one can easily click for all details on the specific set, including pictures.

Based on how pricecharting is setup technically, i do not know if it is possible to add subsets?

Else i would advice something like this with series 2 as example:

Pokemon Trading Cards series 2 (nonholo)

Pokemon Trading Cards series 2 (silver)

Pokemon Trading Cards series 2 (rainbow)

Pokemon Trading Cards series 2 (diecut)

Pokemon Trading Cards series 2 (sticker)

Pokemon Trading Cards series 2 (clear)

https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pok%C3%A9mon_Trading_Cards_series_2

The 5 mentioned sets are all not how they should be currently.

Best regards,

Deon

Thank you for this info.  I will need to look this over more to decide how to proceed.

The problem with using "Series 1" or "Series 2" for the names is, those names aren't written on the cards.  If someone just has a card they don't know what series they have.  But the year is printed on the cards.

I need to see what names are most commonly used with buyers and sellers and see how we can change these names around.  Some of the "subsets" are just variant cards like "Rainbow" or "Foil", we include those in the main set if the number is the same and the card looks the same but there is a variation.  Subsets should have different numbering system.  Some of your examples like "Clear" and "Die Cut" fall into that category because the numbers are different.

Hello sir,

To be really blunt about it, Pokemon TOPPS card sets can not be recognized based on the card.

There is in no set marking on the cards, so that is just not possible.

Especially with the TV/movie cards scattered through different sets, it just cannot be dumbed down any further.

Only Topps CHROME cards are easily distinguished due to the logo on the front, but those still are part of two sets: Chrome series 1 & Chrome series 2.

The names most commonly used by buyers and sellers are the ones on bulbapedia.

When looking at the subsets, I see there is functionality to filter based on different variants so that is a nice functionality that could fix it.

Best regards,

Deon

I added a bunch of different sets to the site and moved/added some cards around.

Added subset cards for Die Cut, Clear, etc.  If the numbering is different than the main line cards it got a new subset.

I added all of the Johto cards and their subsets too.

All of these changes will be visible within 24 hours.

I decided to leave the names for the sets we already have (some slight changes) and use the copyright date printed on the cards.  That is information on the card and that is info that people often use when selling the cards too.

Hello sir,

Thank you for the work.

Sadly leaving the names is simply not usefull.

Collectors do not search based on those names and they are incorrect.

Card collecting is almost always done based on what booster box/pack cards come from and with the current grouping that doesnt work.

Every seller who knows anything about topps uses the bulbapedia names, u can check ebay for that...

Now u have series 2 & 3 together as Pokemon 2000 Topps TV Pokemon Cards, while series 2 was released in 1999. Now the set is huge with like 500cards, which makes it even less clear...

I would highly advice just taking over the Bulbapedia sets!

Best regards,

Deon

Completed

I appreciate your feedback.  I can understand your points.

Like you said in a previous comment, people can't identify the card set based off of the card alone.  We are using the copyright date for the sets (not the release date because that isn't printed on the cards or the packs for that matter).

Most people who use our site use the search feature and they would search "Pikachu Topps TV" and maybe the card number and find their card on the site.  Then they will look at the picture and see that it matches their card.

We are going to stick with the names we have on the site because it works for our users and matches the other card categories that use the same set naming convention.

I appreciate your info on this because it did help us improve the data we do have (and add some missing cards).

Hello sir,

Personally i am more of teaching people the correct way, instead of facilitating the wrong one, but it is your website, so do what u think is best!

Remarks based on current sets:

- Pokemon 1999 Topps TV // Card numbering of the tv cards is bugged

Pokemon 1999 Topps Movie // missing evolution cards E1-E12 (nonh/silver/rainbow)

- Pokemon 1999 Topps Movie // missing chase cards the first movie - diecuts & stickers

- Pokemon 2000 Topps TV // missing chase cards series 2 - diecuts, stickers & clear cards

- Pokemon 2000 Topps TV // missing chase cards series 3 - diecuts, popups & clear cards

- Pokemon 2000 Topps TV // Card numbering of the episodes is bugged

Pokemon 2000 Topps Movie // missing chase cards 2000 the movie - sticker & first appearance

Remarks on missing sets:

- Johto series 1

- Johto league champions

- Advanced

- Advanced challenge

- (Johto series 3 // EU version, would probably not advice adding this one)

Also in general, all missing photos are available on the bulbapedia.

Best regards,

Deon

We moved all of the subsets to their own card lists.  For example:

https://www.pricecharting.com/console/pokemon-1999-topps-movie-die-cut

For Johto, we've added all of those now too.  You can see all of those sets on the site using the "Find Set Tool"

Hello sir,

Thank you for adding those sets =)

If u do not mind i checked them all right away:

- Pokemon 1999 Topps Movie Die Cut Pokemon Cards - these are not the diecut cards, these are the cards from the regular set and should be in: Pokemon 1999 Topps Movie Pokemon Cards.

- Pokemon 1999 Topps Movie Die Cut Pokemon Cards - the correct diecut cards should be added.

- Pokemon 1999 Topps Movie Sticker - all sticker photos are available for usage from the bulbapedia website.

How are photos added? Because also Johto photos are all available on bulbapedia (i added all photos there myself).

- Somehow i am unable to see johto champions and johto champions stickers. Did those not get published yet?

- The correct name is johto league champions and if it is abbreviated Johto league is generally used.

- Only missing sets are advanced and advanced challenge now =)

- Would it be possible to group the TOPPS sets? So other sets do not come between them in the future? Then it is quite easy for people to see that those are all that exist.

And due to not sticking to the sets, we have some weird situations here (we have been over this, so u can ignore this part):

- Pokemon 2000 Topps TV Episode - these are part of the regular set: Pokemon 2000 Topps TV

- Pokemon 2000 Topps TV Heroes & Villians - these are part of the regular set: Pokemon 2000 Topps TV

- Pokemon 2000 Topps TV Puzzle - these are part of the regular set: Pokemon 2000 Topps TV

- Pokemon 2001 Topps Johto episodes - these are part of the regular set: Pokemon 2001 Topps Johto

- Pokemon 2001 Topps Johto champions episodes - these are part of the regular set: Pokemon 2001 Topps Johto Champions

Best regards,

Deon

I've corrected that problem with Die Cut 1999 Movie cards.  Correct ones have been added and other Evolution cards moved.  Because those cards have a different number system, we consider them a subset so they will be in a different set than the other 1999 Movie cards that go from 1-59.

It looks like my upload for Johto Champions didn't work quite right the first time.  I've added them now.  They will show up in 24 hours.

We will grab images as we find sales data, or users can add images too:

https://www.pricecharting.com/contribute

Hello sir,

Somehow the Johto league sets still do not show up for me...

Would it be possible to add a grouping of the TOPPS sets, so it is clear those are all together and nothing is missing?

Just the last advanced and advanced challenge sets would be missing then, great work sir!

Best regards,

Deon

These should all be grouped together already.

Image 222

I see card data in all of the Johto Champions sets.  Please check again.

I've uploaded the set and card lists for the Advanced and Advanced Challenge sets.  Those will appear on the site after 24 hours.

If you have any desire to add photos to these sets, I can grant you contributor privileges on the site.  Please email me your account email address to sales@vgpc.com

Thank you for all your help with this topic.

Perfect, johto league champions is there now =)

In the summer i had large amount of time, so i added all pictures to Bulbapedia.

Maybe around christmas/year end ill be having a bunch of time off again.

Then ill see what i can add =)

Really happy to see topps is almost done here, i appreciate your work alot!

Sounds great.  Thanks for any contributions you can make in the future.  Good luck with school (I assume based on your schedule)

Hello sir,

I just saw u also added the advanced and advanced challenge topps sets =)

When double checking everything i noticed one little thing:

In the johto & johto league champions & advanced & advanced there are both nonholo checklist and silver foil checklist.

So 1 card is missing in those 4 sets.

Rest is all good, so thanks alot for that!

Best regards,

Deon

I'm not sure I understand.  So 1 card is missing in total, or one card variation is missing for all those cards in that set?

of each set 1 card is missing, the silver foil checklist👍🏻
